Gouda Cheese has obtained its name from the city of GOUDA, in The Netherlands. Hundreds of years ago the city acquired the rights to be the sole trading place for cheese made by farms in a large surrounding area. A market developed and still continues today.
The cheese was traded outside at the Market Square and was carried inside to be weighed on the scales. The market is still held once a week in the summer months, though partly to attract tourists.
The cheese made according the local recipe has become known as “Gouda Cheese.” It was brought all over the world by ancient seafarers and is now well known and liked all over.
